About me
My mommy always taught me to share. So in this site, I’ll be sharing with you all the information I was able to gather as part of my next-life project, also known as the move-to-Uruguay-within-2-years project.
I was born in Brazil and came to the US for my graduate studies and ended up settling here. For a few years now, my wife and I have been planning (and saving) in order to return to South America and live off our savings. We are eager to press the reset button, reboot and learn how to become human beings again.
Then why Uruguay and not Brazil?
I would be lying if I were to say we are not tempted by Brazil. The trouble is we are now both American citizens and must pay US taxes on our world income wherever we live. Brazil also taxes permanent residents (up to 27%) based on their world income. So it would cost us dearly to set up residence there. As you may know, Uruguay does not tax foreign income.
For us Uruguay is especially tempting because my relatives live just across the border in Brazil. Also important is the fact that Uruguay and the very south of Brazil have a similar culture, much history in common and a lot of intertwined blood lines on both sides the border.
There are many, many other reasons why Uruguay is a great place. Hopefully this will become clear enough through the articles.
I should warn you that although I grew up in similar culture across the border and have been to Uruguay around 20 times, I have never lived there for longer than one month at a time. Therefore topics I discuss here will certainly contain omissions and misconceptions.
